The Nature of Mathematical Modeling -MAS 864- |
|
|
The class website (the official) is http://www.media.mit.edu/physics/pedagogy/nmm/ |
The best way to understand what is this class about, is to take a look of the book
"The Nature of Mathematical Modeling" wirtten by Neil
Gershenfeld (he is the teacher of the class, what a coincidence!). The class deals
primarily with the techniques that are used for the modeing of natural systems (and the
not so natural ones). It is highly concerned with the implementation and efficiency on
computers of digital systems.
My personal thought is that the class make me regret about not having payed enough
attention to the math and physics in my undergrad; but at the same time gives a second
chance of having "the best of" the interesting things in this two realms. Is
very fast and a lot of brain cells will die during the class (just the weak ones), but it
worth the effort!! (this class has the --rago approval (TM)--). |
First Project
February 8 2000 |
Make a ball bounce, and trace the trajectory, using X-windows, PScript, Java, OpenGL,
and Matlab. |
the source code for each program can be found in the following folders: X-windows
PScript
Java
OpenGL
:this one is tricky. Follow the instructions to run it in your win9X or winNT computer.

A Model of the sound of Running Water... |
Well, I know that this project sounds very weird, but that is the idea.
I want to use the modeling techniques that I learned in this class to find a suitable
model fo the sound that the water makes when is falling from a faucet, or even from a big
waterfall. I'd be very nice if the model has very meninful control parameters (i.e. water
volume, diameter of the pipe, height of the waterfall, number of people drowning, etc). Some
data has to be taken (in this case, the sound of the water in several known environments)
to extract meaningful information about the process. |
